Additional Learning Needs

At Grangetown Nursery School  the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act guides our practice.

We strive to carefully create a nurturing, inclusive and holistic environment which reflects the diverse needs of our school community. We work passionately to consider, adapt and critically assess our environment and pedagogy to ensure that the needs of all learners are met during their time with us.

We recognise that every child is unique and special with a wide range of interests, skills, qualities and attributes. We place great importance on tailoring our curriculum to meet learners’ individual needs and provide well planned and purposeful learning experiences for all.

Each child’s needs are considered on an individual basis. We endeavour to work closely with parents and carers to communicate how best we can support children’s learning and experiences. This may be carried out by the school alone, or with the support of outreach teams.

If you have any concerns regarding an area of your child’s development or progress during nursery, please discuss this with your child’s teacher in the first instance.

If we come to the decision together or individually, that your child has an Additional Learning Need (ALN) which requires some additional support, we will invite you in to school to discuss next steps with your child’s teacher and the Additional Learning Needs Co-Ordinator (ALNCo).

This meeting is referred to as a Person Centred Planning (PCP) Meeting which sees all of the important people in the child’s learning come together to help develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP). This plan replaces the previous Statement of Educational Needs. It is important for families to be included whole heartedly in the development of an IDP and given opportunities to ask questions and express concerns.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's development or progress in nursery, please do not hesitate to give us a call and speak to our ALNCo, Sarah Gallo or email: Sarah.gallo@cardiff.gov.uk
